Sin Of The Month

chef toni srour small.jpgDear Subcribers, it is only right and fitting, we believe, that we bring to you in this particular month, three truly delicious, gorgeous, and gourmet Spoonfuls of Sin from the hands of Chef Toni Srour of The Pastry Xpo in Merrifield, Virginia.  What does the month of August have to do with it, you may ask?  Well, we might answer, it is simply that the word "august" itself means "something that inspires admiration and awe," according to our dear friend, Mr. Webster.  And that definition certainly suits everything in the magnificent 25' cherrywood showcase at The Pastry Xpo.

July 2008's Hot Treats

Whew! It’s a trifle warm out there! So move into a cool spot before you open your pretty little boxes, as two out of three of our delicious delights this month come from warm, southern climates and are guaranteed to charm your taste buds!

Hot as it has been, we at A Spoonful of Sin packed our fans and bonnets and traveled down South in our pursuit of something new and creative for our most special clientele – you! First, we found “3 Sisters Creative Specialty Foods” down in Atlanta. Owned and operated by professional corporate businesswomen-turned-entrepreneurs, these women market, create and bake with a sense of social and environmental responsibility. They happily donate a percentage of their profits to YNOT Grace, Inc., a life-work solutions organization in which they are heavily involved.

After much sampling (we had to be quite sure!) we chose to bring you one of their signature creations, which they call “POP.” It is a truly amazing, absolutely decadent, totally unbelievable thing to have done to popcorn. Yes, I said “popcorn!” The 3 Sisters have taken gourmet popcorn to a whole new level, drenching it in pastel shades of the finest, smoothest white chocolate. But that’s not all. Inside the popcorn they have hidden assorted fillings! You’ve never had popcorn like this, and poor ol’ Orville Redenbacher could never have dreamed about anything like this!

Next, we hoisted our hoop skirts and ambled over to Hattiesburg, Mississippi and Flathau’s Fine Foods. Owned by Jeff and Heather Flathau, both of whom had worked previously for other food companies and caterers, Flathau’s was founded in 2002 and has consistently won awards for its cookies ever since. Winners of Best of Atlanta each year from 2003 – 2006, they have won numerous other awards as well. Heather continues to develop new flavors and recipes, and concentrates on always providing “the greatest cookies in the world.”

Flathau’s has so many enticing flavors to choose from, but we finally settled on the yummy butterscotch snaps for you this month. You’ll be receiving three of these melt-in-your-mouth shortbread cookies, dusted with powdered sugar, with a surprise “snap” of sweetness inside. Oh, just the memory makes me swoon….

But I digress. The last part of our search for “divine sweetness” took us all the way to California and Devine Delights! Beginning as a small family bakery in San Raphael in 1985, this company has grown to be featured in many well-known magazines. Their name is well-chosen: They offer so many “divine delights” we had trouble choosing just one! At last we selected their extraordinary Trufflecot. This is a tart, juicy, jumbo Australian glace’ apricot filled with bittersweet truffle cream and coated with sinfully extra bittersweet chocolate. Beautifully presented, this is very exotic and, we thought, well worth the trip!

Well, there you have it. The “belles” of A Spoonful of Sin have endured the heat and other travails of traveling, not to mention having to taste-test all those delicacies (we threw out our corsets somewhere between Atlanta and Hattiesburg) all for you, our Very Sinfully Important Client. Savor these sumptuous sweets while we plan next month’s delights, right after I find the Epsom salts. These button shoes are killing me.
