Sin Of The Month

chef toni srour small.jpgDear Subcribers, it is only right and fitting, we believe, that we bring to you in this particular month, three truly delicious, gorgeous, and gourmet Spoonfuls of Sin from the hands of Chef Toni Srour of The Pastry Xpo in Merrifield, Virginia.  What does the month of August have to do with it, you may ask?  Well, we might answer, it is simply that the word "august" itself means "something that inspires admiration and awe," according to our dear friend, Mr. Webster.  And that definition certainly suits everything in the magnificent 25' cherrywood showcase at The Pastry Xpo.

Our Story

The idea for A Spoonful of Sin came as the result of a great dining experience with a disappointing ending. Kelly Harman, the founder of Spoonful, was having dinner at a wonderful Italian restaurant in New York. She’d had a delicious meal and was looking forward to coffee and a sweet treat to finish everything off. Unfortunately, when the dessert tray was presented, the serving sizes were so huge that she couldn’t even look at the plates, let alone have one set on the table.

“What I want is something small, beautiful and tasty to help finish off a great meal,” she told the waiter. “Women don’t want such huge desserts – it’ll just make us fat! All we want is a spoonful of sin.”

With that comment, she went back to her hotel room and started thinking of ways to showcase great desserts in bite-sized format. It took almost two years to fine tune the business plan. During her research, she discovered a wealth of talented pastry chefs – all willing to showcase their creativity and passion for the smaller side of sweetness. She invited two colleagues to join as partners; Lissa Levinson and Becky Langager agreed to contribute their considerable talents to the endeavor.

In February 2007 Kelly read “All the President’s Pastries”, by Roland Mesnier. As the White House pastry chef for 25 years, Roland served five presidents before his retirement in July of 2004. Kelly approached Roland and asked him to be part of the Advisory board for Spoonful. Roland agreed, and today he plays an integral role in the company – taste-testing every dessert before it gets shipped to the Spoonful members. As an added bonus, every December Roland will create a special dessert exclusively for Spoonful of Sin members.

The three women of Spoonful share a passion for entrepreneurship and great food, and are looking forward to bringing a wide variety of sinful sweets to the subscribers of A Spoonful of Sin.
